Related: Pennsylvania garden center to close in July When they announced that they were retiring after 29 years of business at Hanover Home & Garden, co-owners Dennis Axline and his wife Karen weren't expecting to make such a splash in their Hanover, Pa., community. Since they made their announcement on June 10, the Axlines say the store has been "overwhelmed" with members of the community looking to get some final shopping in before the doors at Hanover Home & Garden close, as well as express their sadness that their beloved local IGC is shutting down. Axline says customers have told him the business will leave a void in the neighborhood when it closes, which is planned for sometime in July. "We have been overwhelmed since our retirement was announced on Friday," Axline says. "We're amazed at how effective Facebook was in helping to get that word out. We've had numerous people disappointed with our store closing but have expressed their happiness to see us retire. It makes us feel great to have such an impact on the community. It's all been quite humbling." In the coming days and weeks, Axline says a main concern is offloading as much inventory from the store as possible before closing. Though they are considering various offers to purchase the business, Axline says he and Karen can't say for sure what will become of the garden center.  Once retired, the two plan to spend more time enjoying their roles as grandparents, Axline says. And although he and Karen look forward to their free time, Axline says leaving Hanover Home & Garden has not been a painless proposition. "It's been a great ride for 29 years," Axline says. "We've made lots and lots of friends, and (it) was incredibly rewarding. Traveled to many places for trade shows and business to cities that we wouldn't have normally gone. Our employees have been great as well as our many customers over the nearly 30 years serving Hanover. It's been a bittersweet process."

For 29 years, the owners of Hanover Home & Garden center welcomed everyone, from the green of thumb to the botanically challenged, who wandered through their doors. This July, the center is expected to close its doors for good, according to a statement posted to social media Friday.

I want to take this opportunity and give my highest recognition to Ernest (cashier), this gentleman went above and beyond and provide me with an excellent service, support, guidance and help that the least I can do for him is to write this review. Last Sunday I decided to start a very challenging project, to cut the legs of a 300 lb dresser, install a screw and make them detachable. On Sunday night I went to home depot to asked about the project and besides getting little help, I was advice to contact a professional carpenter for the magnitude of the project. On Monday and reluctant to give up I went again hoping I can find the mentor and guidance that I needed it, and I did. I found Ernest, stoking some merchandise in the shelves. I started to tell him a little bit of my project and show him some pictures. Ernest recognized that it was an ambitious project and that it may be more complex than what I expected. Still, he pointed details that I did not know about the steps to achieve my goal. Ernest started to guided me to the different tools that I needed, from a fine saw to the bolts, screws, shafts, etc.. etc.. It took him more than an hour to walk me through different shelves grabbing all I need it plus the necessary explanation. At the end, instead of being mad or annoyed for spending so much time with a customer, he ended with a smile and a “Good Luck”. He went back to his work between laughs and jokes with his co-workers. Mr. Ernest more than providing an excellent service has taught me a lesson in life. If you really love what you do, you do not only are going to provide the best to others but also to be an inspiration. To do the job at the best of every one’s abilities and feel the reward of the job well done, finishing with a smile. I want to apply those principles in my day to day life but it is not that easy. In the end, I went back home and after several hours I completed my project. It was hard work, but I was happy, I made it. But there is one thing for sure, I would not have done it without Ernest help. To Mr. Ernest Supervisor, take care of the man, he is a real great employee, if Home Depot has two of those in that store is too many. Ernest, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!! I will never forget you. You help me a lot, in my so far biggest home project. Sincerely,

Locals often shopped at the center for staple garden items such as potted plants, yard decorations and perennial flowers. For many Christmases, the center sold live Christmas trees outside, while using artificial trees inside to display the business's vast ornament collection — each evergreen often having unique decoration themes.

Alexis was very helpful recommending products and materials for my project. Her ideas were much better than mine as far as durability, ease of use and low maintenance. Turns out, her idea was much less costly too! Obviously, this employee was well informed of products Home Depot carries. She measured, cut and carried everything to the cashier, told me to feel free to call, if I had any questions once I began my project. She truly took an interest in me and said she always enjoyed hearing people's creative ideas, it gave her inspiration to help future customers. It is nice to go into a store and be treated with good customer service. Hard to find that anymore. I will definitely go back.

"We put 29 years of our blood, sweat and tears in this place, and it's time to retire," he said. "It's a positive for me and a negative for others maybe. It's very difficult to say goodbye to awesome customers and employees. It's been a great ride, but everyone should have a chance to retire."
